WORKING MEN'S CLUB

HALF-YEARLY MEETING. The lnlf-yearly meeting of the Wellington Working Men's Club was held last evening, there being a good attendance ol members present. Tho seventysecond half-yearly report and balancesheet, were presented and adopted. Tho balance-shoot showed that the club was maintaining a sound position financially, although 'during tho past eosson tho effects of the strike were felt to a, considerable extent. For a 'period of six weeks during tho strike no visitors ivero allowed the privileges of the club. A conference of clubs was' held in 'Wellington in August last, at tho invitation of tho Petono and Wellington Clubs, and although the results were not up to expectation, it was thought to be only a matter of a little tiine when an association woujd he formed. The Finance Committee, in conjunction, with tho General Committee, were endeavouring to build up a roserve fund for tho purpose of improving the present building, or acquiring a new freehold. Tho Library Committee reported that tho number of books issued during tho half-year was 10,739, and tho number of books purchased was 180. Tho successful annual chess and draught handicap tourneys ended in December, the ,4ioss prizes being won bv Messrs. Barnes, Kolhnp;, Wild, Burgess, and Jensen; 1 and tho draughts prizes as follow:— Wallaco 1; Erickson, J. Keid, and Manson, 3 and 4 (a tic) ; Burgess, C. Reid, and Warren, 5 (a triple, lie). Special chess prizes were won bv Messrs. Larking, Rutherford, and Coulter. The chess championship of New Zealand wan fought out at Auckland during tho New Year holidays and nae won by \V. E. Mason, of Wellington, with 11 points. The- club'trcnro Bwittttives figure prominently in the prize list, It-. 3. Barnes scoring 10 points, and also winning tho "Brilliancy Trizo"; P. Kelling, 9J points. Tho election of office-bearers for the half-year takes place to-morrow night.
