I WOULD GIVE HEALTH TO EVERT CHILD.

(By George M r . Wilder.)

• The following letter from Mr. George W. Wildor, president , of tho Butterick Publishing Company,.to Mr Theodore Dreiser, editor of "The Delineator," was not intended for publication; but itis so virile, tho suggestion'so newj that tho editor, in order that it may roach tho public in all its original force, has decided to take the chances of his chief's disapproval and print it:— ■ ( "Dear Dreiser,—lf I were a National Santa Clans I'd give to every child the loving arms of a mother and a good home. I'd give to every mother knowledge of how to care for her child. Good homes for all children born to the nation in 25 years would give its moral plane a boost such as it never had. Knowledge of. how to care fot and train her child givcu ,to every mother (I mean knowledge of the fundamentals — feeding, clothing, washing) in 25 years would make this people physical giants. "'A sound mind , in a sound body'— nothing is more to be desired. And there can be no influence greater to bring about the first than a good home; none greater to bring about tho second than knowledge among mothers of how to care for their'children—to build up (even how not to undermine) the physique with which, Nature endowed thein. "Dear Dreiser, we've been of Borne ihe'lp in the year just past in finding loving hearts and moral homes for a few of those little ones—mayhap 600. mayhap 1000. We found for them good influences upon whom'no one can tell what other influences might have come., And through them on down the ages to the end of earthly things good shall be where evil might have been. The immortality of the soul some question. There is no question of tho immortality of influonce. And Gabriel, keeping tho Book up yonder, may possibly have used tho tears of joy shed by these children and their new-found mothers to wipe away some of your sins, and even mine, recorded on his pages. Yet there

are in the books I have in mind, Eβ simply stated that any mother may understand. Tho States" or the municipalities should get theso books for mothers and save the children. Free school books for tho fundamentals of education can be had' in many States. How much more important ana tho fundamentals of health 1" It will bo noted thai most of the suggestions of Mr. Wilder arc already in existence and being carried out by the society, not only in Now Zealand, but, by the distribution of literature, as far siiiold as Groat Britain, Canada, Philippine Islands, and, as a result of Dr. King's visit to the Continont, in many leading cities in Germany and Franco..
