CANAL SCHEMES REVIVED.
, AUCKLAND WATERWAYS. Several schemes for the opening 0 f j n _ land waterways in the Auckland district liave booh mentioned at intervals for a, number of years. There are two schemes for connecting tho Waitemata and tho Manukau Harbour, one by way of Tamaki and 'the other by way of the Wliau. There is also a proposal to connect tho Waikato River, with' Mar.ukau Harbour, and still another to connect the Waiteniata Harbour, from Riverhead, with the waters of the Kaipara. It is . now the' intention of the Government to. set tip a,commission to report oil the practicability, of theso schemes. The Right Hon., W. F. Massey stated yestordav tliat nothing had been done up till tho,present with regard to the appointment of tho Commission, but he was awaiting a communication from .the Auckland Harbour Board, and when ho received it the members of; the Commission would bo appointed witliin a few weeks.. It was intended to appoint two expert engineers who had had some experience <f inland waterways.
