RESIDENTS AT GRIPS.

WITH HEALTH OFFICER. (By Talerrapi.—Hdoolil CofresixjmlenU Auckland, January 29. '.A dispute.which promises to have interesting developments is proceeding between the District Health Officer (Dr. Makgill) and t«o residents.of Avondafc. Recently Dr. Makgill selected .a site for a sanitary, dipot in the. suburb named. This. ( aroU.sed tho residents, and several of them erected two barricades ,on the iroads used by tlie contractors. At. each barrier was a notice to the. effect that the roa<l was closed to.traffic. ..

A countor-movo was made late last njght, under the direction of Dr. Makgill. Accompanied by Senior-Sergeant Itutledge and four constables, tho Health Officer proceeded to the locality. It was then found that heavy timber had been used in erecting the obstruction, and, 'though tho pofico were reinforced by the mounted constable stationed in the district,- they could not commence operations, without tools. After a brief interval, however, tho contractor (Mr. Burke) arrived with two assistants, who -brought crowbars and other implements; In order to place the subsequent procedure on a legal basis. Dr. Makgill was the first to mako an attack on the first barrier, which was roughly nailed together hero and therewith 6in. nails.. This, done, the contractor's men and the constables soon made short work of the remainder. .Nd opposition was experienced in the work of demolition at the first.obstacle, though one individual, from behind an adjacent hedge,- uttered a warning' to tho effect that the police, had better not touch tho barricade unless they produced their authority. Some female voices also were raised in protest frq/n the outer darkness. . At .the second barricade half a dozen residents appeared on tho scene, and raised verbal objections to its removal. The Health Officer thereupon proceeded to tho residence of the chairman of . tho Road Board (Mr. J,. Potter), with whoiyi he coiiferredl for a long time. . In the end be_ decided to bo content with the demolition of the first barricade, since it gave access to the depot. •.

Further trouble is expected late tonight, as.it is rumoured 'that the residents intend. to re-erect the barricade, and that they may show more, active opposition!.
