ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL.
. . . WATIvR-MKTER. TROUBLES. The monthly meeting of the Onslow Borough Council' was Ttckl last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. F. Holdsworth) and Councillors 15. L-ynne-bcrgj J. C, Gardner, L. A. Browne, C. Bowden, Donald Munro, R. A. Nicol, Colin Munrg, and A. H. Hoby. District fund accounts, £217 13s. 6d., and catchment loan accounts, £42 35., wero passed for payment. , It was decided to mako further representations to tho City Council regarding the stench arising from tho sopite tank at Kaiwarra. In speaking on this matter, Councillor Lynneberg said that if tho City Council did not won do somothing the Onslow Council would have to'draw the attention of the. I'ubKo Health Department to tho nuisance, which, he said, was becoming unbearable. It. was also decided to make representations to .have tho ventilator moved. It was decided that Messrs. Levin and Co. be informed that while tho council was net satisfied with their letter of January' D, re hours of shuntings on their siding, they were! prepared to give the matter a further'trial before insisting on the extension of tho overhead bridge, A resolution was passed imposing 10 per cent-., penalty on rates, and Kaiwarra drainage instalments unpaid six months, aild fourteen days after date of demand. _The engineer was instructed to interview the. District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, with reference to the stem-water trouble, Westminster Street, Kaiwarra. A letter was received enclosing a sum of £6 25., the result from a dance held to provide a floor-covering for the Khandallah Hall, and asking for a subsidy up to tho amount of the cost of the covering. The matter was referred to tho Hall Committee. Considerable discussion took place on the condition of the Kaiwarra watermeters. ' Tho threats of the council, in tho past, to cut off tho connections'if theso defects .were not remedied, wero deprecated by several councillors, who suggested that milder methods should bo adopted,, and the residents asked to effect repairs. Councillor Lynnberg: So long as w<? have not got backbone enough to eufc'.o-i the connections nothing will bo done! Councillor .Bowden: The meter system is not a success at all. The Mayor: Councillor Bowden rjiakes complaint that those things are paltry. If they are, why don't the residents repaid them. Milder methods, anyone would think that tho Tsar of Russia was threatening. If these ore paltry things. wh£* don't the paltry people, who allow them to continue, sec that they are remedied. After further discussion, the following motion was carried: "That ratepayers served with notice, asking them to assist the council in Its endeavour lu rectify the water system by effecting re-' pairs necessary, in accordance with the engineer's report, within one week, Failing repairs being carried. out, the water Jo bo cut__oif."-
