WHO SHALL CONTROL?

STRUGGLE IN THE WHARF UNION.

Members of the Waterside Workers' Union who formerly were strikers are' nothing if not persistent in their efforts to obtain control of the union. They have forwarded anothor requisition, the seventh, signed by six es-strikors, to the executive of the new union. Tho text of the requisition is as follows:— "We, tho undersigned members of tho union, request you to call a special meeting of the union according to Rule 20 for the purpose of altering the following rules:— " "Rulo 7: To delete the word 'one' and add the word 'three' in'the second lino. (Tho object of the alteration is to make.it three months instead of one before a- member is deprived of tho-rights of membership if his subscription is not paid). "Rule 18: To delete tho "word 'committee' in the last line, and add the word 'union.' (Tin's means that instead of any accounts being rjaid by the committee they must be passed by tho union at a- general meeting.) "New rules: (1) That a general meeting of tho union shall bo held on Monday evenings weekly until ; such time as tho anion is reorganised. "(2) That indigent persons bo admitted as members of tho union until such time as they receive re- ' gular employment sufficient to en- ■ able them to pay their entrance fees and subscriptions. "(3) That clearance certificates from members of the union be accepted in lieu of entrance fees from unons which reciprocate, such c'oarances to entitle applications to full ■ membership." It is well-understood that- all these requisitions • have emanated fiom the strikers' faction in the new union> who are'still Fcderationists. They are said to number 400. _ They are organised, having an executive, separate funds to which they contribute, p-iid secretary of their own. The executive meets daily.
