RECENT MISHAP AT CHATHAIIS. The Marine Department Ultimate that a preliminary inquiry into the circumstance surrounding the mishap to the steamer Himitangi, at the Chatham Islarnds, on January 4, was held by tho Collector of Customs at the Chathnms on January 13. The evidence of the master and several of tho crow was taken and this has been forwarded to tho Minister of Marine (tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher). It is understood tliat the Himitangi struck an uncharted rock in tho vicinity of Taupcka Point, which lies between Cape Young and Kaingaroa, on tho northern coast of the main island. It has not been announced as yet, whether, any Magisterial inquiry will bo necessary liero.
