RURAL CLASSES.

NOT SUCCESSFUL AT KETONE. The- riirnl course included in tho programme of tho Petone Hijjh School has evidently not-been very successful, for at yesterday's ■ meeting of the, Wellington Education Board, tho ..Chief Inspector. (Mr. T- B. Fleming) reported that tho headmaster had 'sent in an amended programmer which■• lie asked leave' to substitute, during tho ctimine year for that laid, down by the-board. It will be remembered' that in 1912, at tho request of tho Petono School Committee, the Education Board derided to give a trial to a. rural course, but, after a year's operation, tho inspectors do not think tSiat results warrant its continuance, , . It appears'that, formerly, excellent work was done by tho. staff in Civil Service and matriculation work, but since tho adoption of the agricultural course this .work has been interfered with, and a numtor or scholars who -would de-siro to.sit for tho matriculation-examination have gone to other schools. The headmaster's proposal practically incant reverting to tho old programme, substituting physics and chemistry for tho agricultural course. ■•■'...

'Some discussion resulted in view of tjie fact* that t3io . school l committee had been very strongly in favour of iostitutins* agriculture in the.school svl» labus. Mr. Moss Wrought that it was te be regretted, that; rrioro, support had not been given to the rural course.

It was decided to refer tho new prtgramfito to tho School Committee before adaptiug it.
