Some time since a. very large concrete culvert was erected at a placo known as Walker's Gully, Pukerimu, to take tho water of a "stream; so that the gully might bo filled in and tho road raised some 50 feet. Before tho filling in was completed tho culvert sank in tho mid- "" die. To effect tho necessary repairs tho water had to bo diverted, and when this was dono tlio large culvert (says tho Auckland "Star") was found to bo literally crowded with eels, estimated by those who saw them at 2000. Had tho Maoris known such a plentiful supply of tho Itisriotis tuna, could' bo obtained for tho fetching, they would have beeji there, in numbers.
