EMPIRE SOCIETIES.

COLONIAL INSTITUTE AND VICTORIA LEAGUE CO-OPERATE. PraeticaJ steps have recently been taken to effect co-operation' between two of the non-political associations which aim at promoting the unity of the EmpireJ-nanwly, the Royal Colonial Institute arid tho Victoria League. The two bodies havo, in large measure, common aims; and whilst-the work of the one is for t'lo most part supplementary to that of the other, it was felt that without some machinery for co-<ip.era-tion, there might be a possibility of over-lapping. A joint standing committee, composed of an eqUial number of representatives of each association, has' accordingly been set m>, and meets periodically, to exchange information and confer with regard to the work of the institute and of tho league respectively. Notices of lectin es given'by «aeh rociety are circulated to members of the other, and tho corresponding secretaries of tlio Royal Colonial Institute and tho secretaries of Victoria Leagues in al! parts of tho Empire 'have been invited to co-operate in this and in any other way that may seem desirable. The Victoria Leiguc- liae circulated amongst its members .it Home and overseas particulars of the gold medal competition of the Roval Colonial Institute. The corresponding secretary of the institute in Auckland has arranged to co-operaU whenever possible with the A'ictorh. Lenguo of that city. The secretary of the A r ictoria League of Tasmania has reported that most of tho Fellows of the Royal Coknial Institute of that State belong also' to tie league and attend ite meetings. -■: During tlio recent visit t<i South Africa of Mr. J. I?. Boose, tlio secretary of the Royal Colonial Institnto, the. A'ictoria League of the Orange Free State c-ave him a reception, at which Lord do Villiers spoke of tho work of -the two associations and expressed.his approval of tho co-operation botwaen them.
