THE CRICKET SHIELD.
EASILY DEFENDED, AUCKLAND LOSE BY 318 RUNS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Chrjstchurch, January 27. Only a handful of spectators attended at Lancaster l'ark this afternoon when the l'lunkct Shield match was resumed. The weather was again of the best, a warm nor'-wester being tempered by an overcast sky. The o.iitfield was 'fast and the heavy work already done on tho wicket did not seem to have impaired it to any extent. Smeeton (36) and Sloman (5) resumed Auckland's second innings which stood at 160 for five wickets. Watson, from the north end, and Monaghan, had'charge of the bowline. Sloman cut Watson sweetly for 4, and after a period of slow jjlay, the same batsman hit Monachal) tor two fours in one over. This took him into tho twenties and sent 180 up. One hundred and ninety followed quickly and runs were coming fast, Sloman getting in some beautiful strokes. At 192 Wilson replacod Watson, whose four overs had cost 18 runs. Tho hatting relapsed into quietness again, but Smeeton eventually sent- tho second century up after 2 hours 40 minutes' play, with a nice 3 to leg. Then vSlowman played a.ball gently to Whitta, who was fielding close in at point, and tho batsman, going, for an absurdly impossible single, Smeeton was run out. . 202—6—48. Dacre started by knocking Wilson up to tine leg, but Patterson was slow in starting for tho catch, and missed it. Sloman hit Monaghan beautifully to leg for 4, but, in Wilson's next over, he stopped n straight one with his pads. 212—7—38. Woods followed and got Wilson past third'man £or 4, but thou Dacro lifted one'nearly to the square leg'boundary where Bishop made no mistake about the catch. . 215—8—2. Taylor joined Woods and the latter hit Wilson finely to tho leg boundary. He tried to repeat the stroke nest ball and was mit I.b.w. 220 —9—B. Clark was the last mall, and his partner drove Monaghan finely to the on 'fence. The newcomer also got Wilson prettily to tho leg fence. Taylor reached double- figures with a fine on-drive, and Clark did likewise with a lusty square-leg hit. The end came in the same over, Wilson bowling Clark with a big leg break. The innings had lasted 3 hours 10 minutes, and Canterbury won by 318 runs. The scores are as under:—' Canterbury. First innings 372 Second innings 362 Auckland.
