He was ..certainly ouo of the most polished and courtly actors, and the finest elocutionist that the .-English'stage lias known during the' past quarter of a century— an actor, who though associated in his years with many of the "old school" players, had absorbed none of the faults, whilst retaining all tho virtues, of the type now almost extinct. lie was actually an artist ami art critic by training, and was the artist in all lie did. In 1870 he was admitted to the lloyal Academy of Art, but four years laler developed a taste for tho stage. nml ha made his debut in 16T4, in "Mary Stuart" at the Princes- Theatre, London. He gained a valuable experience with Charles Calvert at Manchester, where he became the pupil of that fiwneus Shakespearean aelor, Phelps. In 18S0-1 lie supported Madame Modjesfca and in the eighties was closely associated with If* ing, tho Bancrofts, .Tolin Hare. Mavy Anderson, and later still with Mrs. Patrick Campbell. Ho was a remarkably able Shakespearean, and his "Hamlet" is conocdcd to be [lie finest fthionj* living actors. Of recent years he liiis made a large fortune, chiefly owing to- the enormous success of "The Pas-sine of the Third Floor Eack." His wife is Miss Gertrude Elliott (sister of the beauteous Ma sine) and she has been associated with many of his later suceea-es.
