Colonel Day was-best known to Christ-: "church in connection with tho volunteer movement,',, in which he took for many years a prominent part. He joined the College Rifles in 1383, and by 1001 had. : risen..to the rank of lieutenant-colonel,-when he, took command of the North 'Canterbury infantry battalion of volunteers. ■ Later.' he received the' Victoria Decoration, and oiv resigning on March 20/190", he passed to tho Reserve -of Officers.' - ; Shortly after the institution of the Territerinl forces tinder the Defence Act of 1909," Colonel Day took command of tho Canterbury Infantry Brigade, his appointment dating from March 17, IMI, Ho was also appointed an honorary aide-de-eamp to His Kxceltency the Governor. His death is deeply regretted by all interested in tho Territorial defence scheme, in which he had evinced a very keen interest, mid by all ex-volunteers; Deceased hati been intimately connected for very many years with St, Luke's Anglican Clnirc-li, • of which lie was vicar's churchwarden. Born in Lyttelton in 1861, ha was educated at Christ's College. His business career startod iii the Permanent Investment and Loan Association. Later lie went for a trip to England, and on his return joined the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, in charge of one of that firm's departments in 'Wellmsrton. Some timp later he removed to Christclvurch, and became manager of tho pro- , duett 'department of the New .Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association, in which position lie remained until he started business on his own account na a grain and produce merchant. Ho leaves a widfi'.v and two children, a boy and a girl The funeral, which is to be a military one, takes place on Monday afternoon.
