During tho week live seamen from the steamer Zealandic were sent to gaol for absenting themselves without leave. Yesterday a seaman from the Ayrshire v'afl sentenced to a month's imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting an officer. To-day seven more seamen off the Ayrshire were before the Court at tho conclusion of the assault case. They had pone aboard and demanded that steps bo taken to release the man just sentenced and became so abusive that the. police were sent for. The seamen .'were sentenced to a day's imprisonment with instructions that they bo returned to.. their ship. at the expiration of tho ■sentence. ■ A MEMORIAL SERVICE. ■SJ" V.; . Tlmaru, January 25, ■ • "A memorial service arranged by tho ex-Contingcntcrs' Association was held to-day in honour of tho twenty-eight South Canterbury soldiers who died in .the Smith African war. A large crowd assembled at tho Troopers' Memorial, where a service was held. Those taking part .were the ex-contingents (52 out of 00 -in (ho association), the honorary Territorials, Territorials, and the Senior Cadets, the Regimental and Marine ■ Rands.
