Evidence would bo given showing that when. Whittakcr went to Sheffield lie ma do a fresh contract abnonn-* ally 1 favourable to Lipton's. Mr. Muir added that the financial position of tho military defendants was such as not to place them beyond temptations by wealthy tradesmen. Tho subordinate civilians were all servants of .a wealthy corporation, with tho choice between' obedience to° orders or loss of position. Tho persons primarily responsible were Minto and Cansfield (tho general manager), the firmer being tho controlling mind.
