On January 29,1810, the first Govcrnor.'Cantuin Hobson, arrived at tlio Bay of Islands, and the followiii!; day hoisted the Union Jack and read his Commission. On Moy 23, 1840, proclamations of sovereignty over the Islands of New Zealand were is. sued. On Juno i", 1810, the Queen's Sovereignty over the South Island was j formally proclaimed at Cloudy Bay. ,
