MODERATE LABOUR VOTE.
DISGUST FOR WARDISM.
(By Tcl«ffraph.—Special GoifcFuoadent.) Auckland, January 23.
The Auckland "Star" announces that, in view of tho approaching visit of Sir Joseph Ward, an endeavour is being mado by the more moderate section of tho Labour Party to arrive at a basis of agreement that will obviate the clashing of Liberal and Labour interests at the general elections. An initial stop iiv the holding of a meeting in the Trades Hall within the course of a few days. It is felt that, unless on agreement is made that will prevent the splitting of votes by tho Liberal and Labour candidates, the chances of defeating the Government will be sadly minimised, an activo organisation of tho Liberal Party and a givo-and-tftko co-operation with' tho Labour Party, tlio prospects are regarded as excellent. "This reminds one of\he alliance,..entered into at Grey and Lyttolton," said a moderate Labour matt to an Auckland reporter. "If that is a sample of what the Liberals arc going to, heaven help them. It is all very well to talk of the moderate Labour vote. : I am a labouring man, and I know a great many other labouring men, and, if you want to know where my vote is going and the votes of very many others like me, well, they're going for plain Bill Masscy. . That Bill last session for the secret ballot was tho best thing ci er done in this country, and tho moderate workers—the men who have been saving, and have made homes for themselves, and who have reasoned the thing out calmly for themselves, and who are ble3sed with some intelligencewhy they will vote for tho present Government. . There will he a strong labour vote for this Government, and it will represent the very best class of Labour, not tho Red Federation, passive resisters, strike-all-the-time, I.W .W. crowd. The quiet, decent, working man, who reads for himself, and has not got a. great deal to say, is going to vote for the Massoy Government,, and it's tlio bost we haive had for a very long time. I was ono of those called out 011 strike recently owing to the action of irresponsible agitators, and I had a hard timo of it, and if Sir Joseph Ward thinks liis heart-to-heart talks are of any use with tho red hot mob that got up tho strike, well he's welcomo to tho company. The attitude of Sir Joseph Ward and Ins followers during tho strike did more to lose him the moderate Labour rote than lie imagines, and tho way the Government handled the situation has earned for it tho whole-hearted admiration of all thinking workers."
