THE CENTRAL MISSION.
The first anniversary of the appointment of the Rev. G. Kuowlea Smith and Sister Alice to the Wellington Central Mission is to bo celebrated on Sunday, when the missioncr- is to have tho ser- • vices of an old-time London superin- ' tendent, the Rev. J. Flanagan. Mr. Flanagan will he remembered by his former visit to the Dominion a few years ago. Dr. Parker spoke of him as "the greatest living evangelist,'' and his fourteen years' work in the slums of South-East London have supplied him with a fund of information, which will greatly interejt all interested in social and labour problems. Vivid pictures of , real slumdom will bo exhibited at his - lecture, pictures taken-often at.consid- - erablo personal risk. ... Apart from the visit of this distin- • guished mission worker, tho anniversary , should emphasise tho excellent work , done by tho mission amidst mostjliffl--1 cult conditions. The addresses of tne - missioner have secured a crowded the- - atre every Sunday evening, whilst the - social work done bv Sister Alice, who is - also a trained hospital nurse, lias con- - sidorablv increased the value of tho mission. Tho Silver and Boys' Bands are institutions well known to the city, and s take.their place amongst the hest. pro--5 viding every Sunday open-air nmsie for the masses. I It is understood that the authorities are seriously considering the need for up-to-date mission premises, and this anniversary will doubtless assist them , to realiso that tho citizens aro.in full sympathy wtih their eft'oris.
