RACING AT TRENTHAM.
SUMMER MEETING, lift! SINAPIS WINS THE BIG HAfScAp WELLINGTON STAKES.' ;: REPUTATION SCORES ON THE POST. Anniversary Day at - Trentham is the most important date in the Wellington Hacnig Club's year, and a record muster of the- public is always looked forward to. Yesterday the we'atier was not at its best,. but the day «as fine when people set out for the lacecourse, and gale and dust .were' sot sufficient to keep the sporting section o the community a t ht)Ble . . Nearl . all the trams were crowded,-and■'■•■■the majority of the people who . attended the second day or tire meeting would be justified m saying that travelling to ad from the course, was not as comforta le as it might have been. There was the usual struggle to purchase- a railto the platform, and. in some eaies a struggle to obtain a seat on the train. On arrival at the other crol the trouble was not at an end. and those travellers who had thoughtfully separntod their tickets and held ready t> ,: Admit to Course" half were stopped at the gates and made to produce ti other half of the- ticket bdore . tliej could leave the platform. There was such another struggle to got on the return trams, and on account of the large numbers desiring to catch . tho earlier trains many hud to do without seats for tho journey. However, thebotliings do not seem to eanse rating crowds much worry, and yesterday $ bia crowd cot through the ordeal <iu tht nsual style. : :■■ .■ From early morning a high wind '' Wowing !U LI , L . UU( ..^ ; ~„,„ after threo o clock the rain, which had been threatening for some, time, descended in thick drizzling showers. This probably accounted for a slight diminution 'in totaiisator investments, bin in spite of tins the money handled by the machine officials during the day amounted to p<,030, and although this is-not as. largo as the sum handled on Anniversary Day in 1013, the total for the first two days is considerably in excess of that- for the corresponding days last year. On the wliole, backers had an oft-day, and only two actual favourites prevailed. The principal race of the oay the "Wellington Stakes, for two and three-year-olds, resulted m Imputation scoring a brilliant, victory from what looked to be h hopeless position. He credited Mr. W. E. Bid will with his first win in this race, although the Wairarapa sportsman had started some smart youngsters in the event on previous occasions. In the Racing Olub Handicap, Bou Ton's gear went wrong when he was loading, and tho race was afterwards easily won by Sinapis, ivdo covered tho mile and three furlongs in very smart time. The Wellington Stakes. Ten starters went to tho post for tlto \\ ellnigtou, Stakes, Moivbray being tl*o only representative ' of the three-year-old division. Ashby's fuH-skter, Bencontre, with Deeley in the saddle, was niiido a good favourite, with Pariform and the bracketed pair, Hyettus and Hymettius, next in demand. To all appearances the favourite had everv chance of winning had she been good l>jit nt.tlio end s-ho ■.'jvas; not 'among the'plaecd-divisionvand-yetJ she was not very far away, for there was not more than about two lengths between the first half-dozen, hi the eatly .stages of fjie. race Reputation and I'ariform were not' siglrted' iioar the' froiit and it. was not. uiitil .Hyettiia ~-,iid Hymet-tra* appeared to have the ratio •woiithat-tliey came on the (.cent!. Pariform on tho outside then 'appeared to have every chance of winning, but Reputation appeared to be hopelessly blocked. In tiie last few strides, however, the half-brother to Elevation got through, and won brilliantly by a Heck, while, Parifonn occupied third position only. Iho honours of the race wero : undoubtedly with the winner,- who was greeted with applause ou returning to the birdcage. Outside. of the placed i horses the most attractive performer was Bold Stroke (San. FranciscoBrave Heart), who showed great pace,, but who is a trifle wild at present. i rtaolng Club Handicap. . Bon Ton, the top-weight, was heavily' supported in the Racing Chib Handicap Any- chanco the Boniform colt had was'! extinguished through one of his stirrup leathers giving way after about five furlongs had been covered. Gray had I his mount in a front position, but' when the leather gave way Bon Ton was knocked' back several lengths. His ! jockey made the most of the (liflimiH situation, ami recovered a good doal of grounS in the straight, but it was then teo lato. With tho favourite out «,f i tho way, tho Now Zealand Cup winner I Sinapis won easily and in verv fast tune. Bleriot's hard race in the Wel» lington Cup had evidently had its' effect on the Soult mave, for after rvmJiiug to the front half-way through the' rac« she only lasted a couple of fur- I longs, and finally, finished second to last. Los Angelos was apparently another who was feeling the effects of the Cup I race. He was very sore. Sir Knox who gained third position, did so i»v means of a great riin in the straight. * . ' Douro c-jp. The Douro Cup (hack conditions) brought out fourteen runners, who were scarcely as good as those that have previously uontester; the race. Hero a«ain the gear of one- of the horses (Historictte) went wrong, and the candidate s chanco was destroyed, though fortunately nothing more serious had to bo reported. Birkful, who was nwle a solid favourite, had anything hut, ?; smooth passage, and just managed to run into second place as tho post was reached. In the circumstances he did well to finish in front of the spn-'dy ' (Jhudic, but ho had no possible chane'° or defeating Jlonologuo, who appeared to have the raco in hw keepjner a t anv stage. ° J Metropolitan Handloap. ■ Beldame, the first day's sprint winner was the popular fancy or tho down runners in the Metropolitan Handicap but she never seemed to hold a' winning chance, and after .being in fourth position, m the first furlong she dropped right back. Adroit, who was on'- of those, who round the pneo too hot in tho Inal Plato on the first day (the seven furlongs wore covered in l m in. 27sec.) ran to tho front at the start of tlm Metropolitan Handicap, and led throughout. She was followed bv PProrilla, Jvrmengardo, and B»n Revc, bnt ■ the first-named failed to see out the journey, and finished well.back, while hrmengardo just lasted long enough te beat Bon Revo for second money. The Minor Events. Record (Renown-Famous), who was reported to liavc'mot with interference in the 'Irontham Uel or Handicap on tho first day, was made, favourite for the Jliimjarna We tor, but Sir' Donald aiul Canute were also very well backed. Zens endeavoured to win all the ivav. but at ttvi business end Canute came alow; ami won comfortably by half a length but Record and Sir Donald had to be content frith third and -fourth positions Yoi'ii* rider of Canute, was fined JJIO for cutting in on Zeus. Only five starters wont to the post fnr the January \\eltcr Handicap, foi- which Iniiißination, Stepney, and Cflcnfinnan wore all heavily backed.
