ADDRESS BY DR. ADENEY. — * The Rev. Dr. W. F. Adoney gave another address in the Newtown Congregational Church last evening. Tho subject; was "The New Testament After Criticism." The speaker opened by saying that many people regarded the criticism of the Bible as necessarily ruthless, whereas the. function of the critic who loved his subject was to judge the Biblo fairly, find cut all he possibly could about it, and give his results to the world. Dr. Adoney went on to giv»> a clear resume of what the various critics had done in this direction in connection with the New Testament, and hestaled how, in spite of much adverse criticism, the New Testament stood today as tlie greatest book wo had,, and Christ the greatest figure ever known. They must remember, continued the preacher, thai the New Testament was received through earthly vessels, and that spiritual truth must be spiritually discerned. The experience of twenty centuries, was the real proof, and. after tho utmost criticism tho Bible could be considered infallible after' all. Dr. Adoney recommended his hearers to read Professor Take's introduction to the New Testament as being easily understood. At the conclusion of the address a hearty voto of thanks was passed to Dr. Adoney for his interesting lecture. In theso days of rapid transit no ono cries, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horso" (says a Southland paper). Indeed that useful quadruped, even in New Zealand, has in many enterprises been superseded by the motor. In support of the belief that the horse is fast losing caste in tho order of utility, a poundkoeper in an outlying district reported to the Southland County Council that two horses, which had been impounded had not been. claimed, and had to be sold. Ono of them realised live shillings, and the other'eleven shillings, which amounts did not cover expenses. As a currency for the purchase of kingdoms, the noble steeds of former days have at least in some instances ccrtairilv declined. ■'■ ; , HIGGINSON ft MACBETAffE, fibaretrotan knd Aoooqnt&iU, 143 FBATHSHSTON ST., WStXUfQTOR. ; iricaraaWMwalwi.
