CHURCH UNION.
VlEtfS OF THG ARCHBISHOP OF" YORK. By' i'eloiy-aph—Pi'ess Affiodia'ion—Coorricht '■Vf- ■tendon, January 10. 1
'■ The' Archbishop of York (Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang), m his address''at St. M n's Cathedral, Edinburgh, said that ovei'.voiie recognised that the futuro of Christianity in Africa depended not on missions, but on tho native church, which done could ultimately preserve it. Hence the effort to create some fabric of ■ Christian co-operation within which the uativo church might grow up find betymc strong. On the other hand, the Anglican Church had to consider the great principle of loyalty to tho trust of a unique opportunity. She stood between tho great Latin and Greek bodies on the one side, and the various soctioss of Protestants on the other. It-was needless to remind them of tho ties binding them to their Protestant fellow-Christians, but they must also remember that there could be no fulfilment of the Divine purpose by uniting in any scheme that did not include ultimately the great Latin Chuvch of the West and the Orthodox Churches of tiie East, to which they were still bound by many ties of common faith and practice. ' A satisfactory solution of the problem depended on the temper of the ehui-eli-es. The Archbishop urged tho necessity for patience, emphasising the example of the tv,'i> great Presbyterian churches in Scotland in their search after reunion. ■ .
