The Archbishop of York, at St. Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, said that the recent conference at lukuyu was an interesting and careful experiment hi missionary policy. The region where theso special circumstances prevailed called loudly for Christian co-operation, and the subsequent act of Communion was a mere episode, wise or unwise, for which the particular persons concerned would be responsible, all at some time. Ho earnestly loiigwi for ;i common Christianity iiiat. they might show a more united front against the summnsli«E indifference, unbelief, and selfishness. There was still, despite ail sectarian divisions;, a mighty force latent, waiting to bo aroused. In this common Christianity, i.f pressure and desire were so great, Britain was really infinitely more stronger in Africa, where the rival divided Christian forco was unitedly determined 'to tho power of Islam. Everyone, ho said, recognised that tho Christians of future Africa depended not on 'the missions hut on the native. ohurcli, which alone could ultimnte* ly preserve it. Hence the effort to create some fabric of Christian cooperation within which the native church might prow up Mid bccoma strong. On the ether hand, it wfts ft great principle, of loyalty to the trust <rf this unique opportunity that s!i« stood between the great Latin and (J reek bodies on <he oiie side, and tho various sections c* Protestants mi tlitf other.
