Tlve Victoria League of London has lately mado a new departure and opened an information bureau there for tho convenience of strangers visiting tlio city desiring information on subjects of interest to them, not only in London itself, but any part of the Empiro where there is a branch of the league. This has proved so successful that the parent league has expressed tho wish that the .work shall be taken up by all the, other branches in tiie Empire, and to this end (states tho Auckland "Star") tho Victoria Leaguo of Auckland lias commenced operations by having an office at tho Exhibition for the purpose of giving information to strangers visiting tbo city. .

:ln a communication to tho Whangarei County Council, the Under-Secretary for-'Public Works stales that tho Minister of Mines is unable to see his way to approve any further subsidy for prospecting for cinnabar in the Pvihipuhi district, as tho prospecting already done and the discoveries made indicate that further prospecting is scarcely necessary .at- present. i . The final meeting of the committee set- up by,the Early Settlers® Association . for tho purpose of carrying otit the Anniversary day celebration at Newtown Park nest Thursday, was held at the Town Hall last night. "Doiiatinns in cash have been received from Mr. Sydney Johnston, Takapau, and Mrs. Walter Johnston, Highden, of £3 35.. and £'1 respectively. ■ A passenger by one of the expresses to Christchurch from the south on Wednesday was in a very disturbed state of mifid, consequent upon the foss of the greater part of his luggage. It seems, says the "Lvttolton Times," thai he left Dunedin with seven bottles of draught beer iti a (wis. and somewhere on the journey tlve corks came out. The jaunts of two young Whakatane half-castes in a motor-ear (says the "Opotiki Guardian") is tho subject of considerable local comment. The young men "borrowed" tho car, which is tho property of an Opotiki dentist, at Ohiwa, without- taking the trouble to ask his consent, and a cloud of dust and the aroma usually associated with a passing car were tho only clues left behind thorn. They scorched to town at top speed, damaging the car somewhat, and, it is stated, not being a ( t all selfish in their amusement, treated several of tlioir lady friends to "joy rides." The ear, which is a small one, was eventually wrecked on an embankment on the way back, and some considerable damage done, tho settlement for which will no doubt provide a salutary lesson.

A coal ; seam of distinct promise has been located in the hillside overlooking Deborah Bay, near Shag Point, by Mr. C. Connolly", of Port Chalmers. Tho finder's attention was directed "to tho place some time ago by tho outcrop. Investigation disclosed tho fact that tho out-crop of shiny black coal was associated with the fire clays and bituminous slate, etc., which indicate tho presence of coal seams of considerable thickness. In considering these facts Mr. Connolly felt justified in opening up the hillside to permit of oldscr investigation, and the discovery of a seaj.i of considerable thickness is said to have resulted. An export is stated by the Dunediii "Star" to havo visited tho place, and his examination, which has not yet been completed, goes to show that the putting in of a drive into tho hillside would he warranted. As tho liiaco is within 100 yards of the railway line, tho matter of traction will not bo a serious problem in the opening up of tho mine.
