.■ .;... ... . »_ ■ COMING CONTEST AT AUCKLAND, Mr. A. D. • Bayfield, hon; secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, has received- a challenge from tho Union Boating Club, Wanganui, to row tho Auckland Bowing Club, the holders, for tho Sommcrville Challenge Shield. The race will take placo at Auckland on Saturday, January 31. Considerable importance is attached to tho event, as it will bo the first contest for tho shield, as well as the first occasion on which an inter-club eight-oared event has been arranged in New Zealand. Tho Now Zealand Amateur Rowing Association hope to sw» this class of rowing taken, up throughout the Dominion. The wish is expressed that tho shield may be frequently contested for. • Tho challenger has to compete on tbo waters of tho holder, and should Auckland be defeated on this occasion, tlio next contest will bo held on the Wangauui River.
