Sadd selected tho Wellington representative polo team at the Tβ Aro Baths on.Saturday last, and new that tho team is known members have aifiplo. .time-to get, in somo practice work. So iar.v.uo, special- team representing the interests of the local centre lias been selected, but it will not he long before Secretary Stevenson i-3 stirring up enthusiasm, ■ .. .-.:: . . ~■.."„. .■.γ-v. / The Polo Team. ■■■■■'' -:■'■ •■'■.;; ; r:V ■-'•■ Everyone will feel like congratulating Mr. G. Sadd for his promptitnde in selecting tlao Wellington water-polo representatives. "Splash" also hastens to compliment Mr, Sadd, afidineidoni ally the Wellington Centre, on the general calibjo-'of tho team, which is:— Goat, G. P. Hiuiria (Wellington Club);, backs. A. M, Smith (Swifts Club), B. Levy (Old Boys), S. Murrcll (Wellington); forwards, U. Newman (Old Boys), C. V. Fordlmm (Swifts), and. H. Jenkineon (Swifts). Tho majority of these players were in last year's team, Murrell and Newman only being new to representative honours. tianna, of course, was certain of selection, being undoubtedly tho best pat-kec-pek Wellington hafi * yet produced. It was at wanganui last year that Hnnna first discovered his "gift" for goal-keeping, end eince then he has steadily improved, until ho is (in "Splash's" opinion) as good, if not better, than any Now Zealander bow filling a similar position. Smith (Swift's half-back) ia a fine exponent of the art of marking liis man. For his benefit it may be stated, however, that, at times, ho is inclined to watch his opponent a little tee- assiduously. However, ho is a decidedly strong bask, and a Wellington team would not be representative without him. Levy's place in the team was, of course, also assured, but his habit of indulging in fouling must bo immediately dropped. His form this year suffers considerably by comparison with last year's, but nevertheless he will bo a valuable member. Murrell has shown wonderful improvement- during the past two seasons and , certainly deserves his selection. At marking his man, he is quite an adept, but his handling of tho ball leaves much space for improvement. In tire writer's opinion ho had no real rival for the position. , Both Capper and Morpeth had prior claims to iNewraan for inclusion in tho forward lino, but as neither can make tho trip Newman's selection was inevitable.. There will no doubt be some who' consider that Stratford and Russell have been overlooked, but neither could serve tho team as well as Newman. Russell certainly plays a heady game —more so than Newman—* but tlio latter is decidedly the. stronger l>]ayor of the two. There is n deal more vigour than science, iri New-man's repcrtoiro, but doubtless a , better 'acquaintance with the art of handling the leather will bring about a more judicious mixture, Fordham and Jepkinson, of tlie Swifts forward line, would be valuable' to the team if only for tho reason that they fully understand each other's play. )3oili are experienced players, aad their presence in the team has added eonsid' -erably to its strength. ,i •:■ The Team' Must Praotloe. ■. i Individually. •. and collectively, there-:,! fore,..tbo: team is Wellington's strong* cat. There remains about a, month in which' to gather together some combination and it bohoves every member to get in as much practice as possible. There is no reason why Wellington should not lift tho banner with this team. Mr. G. Sadd has been appointed manager. Worser Bay Carnival. The fourth annual carnival of tlio Worser Bay' Swimming and Life-Saving Club is to be held at Woreer Bay on Anniversary Bay, January 22. 'The club has arranged an attractive programme, which should draw many swimmers. Nominations close with' the secretary, Mr. S. T. Silver, to-day. Centre's Standard Times. At tho Wairarapa Club's carnival, to bo held on January 22, certain local shimmers will, it is understood, make attempts to gain the ■Wellington Swiaiwing Centre's handsome etaudard timo certificate. Miss O'Leary is at present training for the 100 yds. ladies' standard certificate, mid both M'Carlio and Newman aro out after "standards." M'Cavlie is to swim for the iOOyds. standard time,, and R. M. Ncwninji, who has been doiiig a deal of practice lately, is out to capture the 440 yds. standard. Th© local centre's standard times at present aro: 50yds., 28sec.; 100 yds.; 6Ssoc,; 2%d5., 2min, 50sec.; 'UOyds., 6tttin. 30sec.; 880 yds., 13mm. 30see.; 1760yd5., 28nvin.; fttOyds., brcast-strokej Sirtin. 335e«.; 100 yds., laclier, 98sec. All tho above times are open to be broken at any timo. Tho WHton Trouble, "Splash" mentioned in his notes last, week that, the local centre had decided to suspend Puvcy Wilton, who at the time of his suspension, had failed to substantiate certain statements which he is alleged to hayo made, n.nd which reflected on a certain official. The suspension has now boon liftod. It appears that Wiltoti had attended a recent meeting of the centre, and his evidence bearing out a certain, charge has been token. Tho matter is now in tho hands of the executive of the centre, whom, it m understood, aro going to havo a full inquiry. Some Stray Notes. C. V. Fordham has, it is understood, been putting up some good times over tlio 50yds. stretch at tho To Aro baths.. He, us wMI as E. W. Newman and yofing M'Carlio, should be pretty well certain to hn ■Hrrted. amongst, others, ti represent \ycllingtoti at tho New Zealand championships.
