SWOLLEN RIVER FLOODS THE COUNTRY

Reports from tlio Ciiiubciland district, in Maryland, relate that tlio Potomac Rivor lias overflowed its hunks and inundated a largo area of country. Hundreds of people aro homeless. . Owing to tlio west Virginia Pulp Paper Company's dam breaking, a wall of water swept down tlio valloy, carrying off houses bodily. : Warnings wcro telephoned along tlio lino of tlio flood, and those saved hundreds of lives. A few persons woro then supposed to have been drowned. The lingo wave travelled twenty miles beforo rejoining tho Potomac, below tlio town of Sehneir, increasing tlio height of tho river five feet. Tho authorities blew up several bridges to prevent tho wreckage from choking tlie current and flooding the surrounding country.
