. BETWEEN 1 NEW ZEALAND AND CANADA. (By T«l«sraph.—Prces Auoolatlon.l Auckland, January 15. A practical outcome of the activities connected with the Hands Across tlio Sea Club is nn exchange between three teachers from Canada and tliroo from New Zealand. Tho'lattor loft for tho sister Dominion by the Malnira. last month, having come from, schools in tho South Canterbury education district, and tho Canadian teachers arrived this .'afternoon by the steamer Mnrnrna. Tho two' vessels passed in the Pacific Ocean, and thus Was the ideal of "hands across ,thr sea" interestingly 'exemplified. The Canadian .teachers are bright young women, with a ttisto for educational adventure, and they are proud of bciiig identified with the first exchange offected between any overseas Dominions, n«r medium of the club referred to. They will teach under tho auspices of the South Canteibury-Edu-cation Board for a year, when they will return, to the place whence they came, Brandon, Manitoba. The names of the trio arc: Misses Parker. Shnrman, and Pilling, whilo those of the teachers who were sent from Xow Zealand are Misses Cnsky, Lindsay, and-Swat.' • ■ '
Tlie frequency with which weird and often unintelligible epistles axe received 'by locnl bodies would surprise the ordinary citizen, and-that these'bodies manage to satisfv the requirements of such a multiplicity of applicants'is n token to their pntience. ; A typical orio esme before "the Southland County Council last week, wheii tho ■ following was read:—"As mv neighbours' will not allow me to take the Faul the water'is flowing on inv land that I .cannot crop the laud as "a cannot, get Faul. I Dranemy land anv- other Wiw Please serid answer." Behind this vague epistle:lay a request for permission to deepen, a" drain,, and .the-..members.. of the council were able to penetrate its meaning, .and tho request was granted. Never before, accordinft-to tho "Herald," have so many Auckland residents bee'n beiit on n- prolonged '.holiday. Tlie booking in al! vessels by which.it is possible to reveh London during tlio next few-mont'.n constitute .-a-record, eclipsing thoso of tho early months of Coronation, year. In tho, tourist bureaux tho talk is-'not c-f shortness of money, but of inadequacy of steamer accommodation. The' vessels leaving Svdne.y for t.flndon. via the, Suoz'Giiial. during the next few months all- havq their qiiota of New Zealand passengers,, ami tho accommodation was engaged months aro The vessels nailing from /jeaiftnei direct durinc the; next three months will b« full shins, and no accommodation is available by any route until abmit May. ■ . , Three southorn holiday resorts hove shared almost equallv in tourists favour this summer. Tliese mo StMvott Island, Queenstown. nnd Mount Cook. At each resort the accommodation bouses are stated by tlie Dunedin "Star" to have boon taxed to the »t----most throughout the season. -The charms of tlio south and west havn tie-, lighted many tourists from beyond the seas. The Farmers' Bristol A<w>ciftlion liave an announcement in this: issue whicli i should prove intprortiiiir to shippers of frozen meat.
