TO OPEN AGAIN. The Hon. W. Eraser (Minister of Mines) informed a Domis'iox reporter yesterday ■ that the State coal mines would very probably be reopened shortly. Work was to have been commenced at the Seddonyille Mine this week* and the Point Elizabeth and Liverpool Mines .would be probably opening next week. ■ Tlie workers had agreed to register under the Arbitration Act—a course which he had insisted upon. The Seddonville' Union was already registered,'and the other union of the workers in the other tiro 'mines was being registered. ■.
Tliere is to be erected at the t<p of the M'Kinnoii Pass in Fiordhnd a vary fine cairn in mehiory of (.ho late Mr. Quinton M'Kinnon.- who iliscnvorsd the Pass in 18S8, and who was diowned four years later in Lake T6 Anau. The plan of the cairn, which is being erected by the Gaelic Society of New ierland ami tho Otawo Rugby 'Football Union, assisted by tho Government, s-hows that it will be an imposing structure- in a noble setting. Tlio cairn will ie built of rough hewn stone, topped with n cross and frruted at the base .Mth n memorial slab of granite. II is understood that tho cairn will Im erected before tho end of the present season, nm\ that a'number of prominent Highlanders in Dunedin, .iscomnaniod by pipers, will attend the ;irivnilin<; ceremoiiv at the of '/he I'nss. A few thefts of motor cycles liavo been, reported in Wellington of Late. Tho last wan that of Mr. V.R. Mcreditli'R machine, which was taken from ontsidn his office diliing his temporary absence. Tho Defence Staff ride, which takes place on January 26 to 29, at Hafnilton, will be carried out on the lines followed last year. . All the officers of the Defence Staff, Headquarters, will bo attending, and will leave about January 2-1. A short time ago Commissioner Eiclianls acquired "Hetlroofs," a property adjacent to Dinieclin, for tlie purposes of a , maternity homo for tlio Salvation Arinv. The premises have been fitted up in tho most approved style, and will bo opened -by tlie Commissioner in February. The chief secretory and Brigadier Bray will accompany the commissioner,
