Canada and tho United States obtained 54,000 immi-grants'a-year from these countries.' Tho Victorian Minister in charge of immigration, Mr. Hagelthorn, ■ stated subsequently that tho State had already secured 14,000 berffis for assisted immigrants from England to Victoria dur.ing this year, at the rate of about £14. ■ per head. It was found that there was a failing off in tho number of agricultural labourers now, coining to Victoria, nnd increased energy was necessary to encourage them to take the journey. It was proposed by the Ministry, Mr. HagdiUiom added, to have a special publicity campaign in England, in order that iand-scekers and agricultural labourers might have brought prominently tinder their notice tho advantages which would result from their emigration to Victoria. He understood that the* Commonwealth Ministry, tvns undertaking; to pay tho expenses of advertising for tho States, and that it would contribute towards the- cost of advertising the resources of in. connection'with tho Victorian Ministry's proposal' to condi'et immii",iition work in Northern Europe.
