COLONIAL STEAMERS AND THE PORT AUTHORITY. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright (Rec. January 14, 10.20 p.m.) London, January 14. Before tho Dominions Trade' Commission, Mr. 'J. Broadbank. representing the Port of London Authority, gavo evidence that tho rates at Loudon were higher than at- other ports because tho accommodation was better, and the value of tho lands and the wages paid were higher. When making a comparison of the rates this was often ignored. There was no possibility, ho continued, of bringing the largo colonial v'esisels.to., discharge their cargo in-the .-jdieartt of London.:., Jf.-desirable,.-, they-' could remove tho fruit markets at Covent Garden to the Docks. "The Port. Authority," ho : said, r'.'does its.utmost to meet tho requirements of trade-." Tho general character of. most of the Australian cargoes prevented part of these cargoes, and fruit, from bein gdischarged at tho special depots.
