With commendable enterprise the Hokianga Chamber of Commerce Ini3 issued a well-printed publication dealing with Hokianga and the north-west of New Zealand, and describing tho more important events of 1913. In an introduction the following remark is of interest: —In describing Hokianga County as it really exists to-day, as a rich but only partly-developed country, it will be asked why, if tho county is really, such ns depicted, it lias nc-t long, ago been thickly-populated, and its resources developed ? Tho answer is that tho Government and tho Natives have, until recently, reserved two-thirds of the land, which has remained the homo of wild pigs and cattle. Even 'now more than half of tho whole country, under ono pretence or another, is closed to settlement; but there is an'expectation that a more liberal policy is to bo pursued in the future, and that tho opportunity will be offorded to the 1 public to occupy this corner of the Dominion. The butter, cheese, and timber industry ore dealt with at length in tho publication, and the growth of tho district can be judged from tho ono fact that in 19(18-9 tho Hokianga Co-operative Dairy Company produced 58,9G01b. of butter-fat, and increased this fay, 1912-13 to !M>,7o-51b.
