TO CONSERVE THE FORESTS.

NEW SOCIETY FORMED. .. (By Telesraph.—Press Association.! . Christchurch, January 12. An organisation, entitled' the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society, has lately been formed with headquarters at Wellington. The provisional executive include: Mr. C. H. Treadwell, who is chairman, Mr. L. 0, H. Tripp, Mr. H. G. Ell, M.P., Mr. B. M. Jlolinoaux, Professor H. B. Kirk, and Mr. G. E. Tolliurst. Mr. C. I. Dasent, secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, is acting as interim secretary Rnd His Excellency tho Governor is to be asked to accept tho position of patron. ■ The objects of the society are: (a) The conservation of wild Nature by inculcating among tho public, especially children, an interest in native flora and fauna and the protection and preservation thereof; '(b) the conservation of tiny forest growing on tho road&ide'or banks of rivers, and on other public lands, and tho protection of tho same as far as possible; (c) tho setting a-side as publicreserves of any privately owned reserve and forest lands which are in danger of being- destroyed; (d) tho assisting of any movement whether organised by private persons, local bodies, or the Stato taken for tho purpose of protecting any area of land covered with forest; (e) tho assisting of any movement for tho protection of any native birds or animals.

The membership fee is 10s. annually and this money is intended to be devoted to forwarding tho objects of tho new society. It is intended to Siavo corresponding members interested in the work of tho society ia all districts and possibly branches of tio society.
