Graham, District Coroner, held an inquiry this morning into tho circumstances surrounding the death of James O'Mahouey, who was killed in tho railway yard during shunting operations on- Saturday afternoon. Dr. Sowerby said that when deceased was taken to the Hospital he was suffering from intenso shock, as the result of the mangling of the upper part of tho left leg, and a compound fracture of each log above the knee. Tho left log was amputated. The patient stood tho operation badly, and sank rapidly, dying • without regaining consciousness. Death was duo to shock.

To Senior Sorgeant Dart: Thero had been somo delay over getting surgeons. Witness had rung up all tho honorary surgeons on tho Hospital list, but nono ,of thorn ivas at homo. Any delay was unavoidable. Dr. Newlands arrived within ten minutes after being summoned, but ho had to wait several minutes for assistance. 'After tho arrival of Drs. Batcbelor and O'Noil there was 310 delay over tho- oporation. Everything possible was dono to sustain the patient whilo they wero awaiting the arrival of t'lio surgeons. . Mr. Lemon .commented adversely on tho fact that thero had been delttV at tho Hospital,- and said that something should be done to •ensuro:tho immediate performance. of. operations in such necessitous cases. ,

Dr. Sowerby, in reply to counsel, stated that lio liad no authority to summon' surgeons who were- lint ton. members of tho Hospital staff. Nr doubt it could bo done, but there wsb 310 authority to .do it. •

Mr: Lemon: Itj's a scandalous thing that, there is no autliority,, Tlio Coronor:"I agree ,'tjiat l when lionorary surgeons are, not'available the resident surgeon should icall in outside 'Assistance." It: was impossible, contin- ' nod the Coroner, ; to say from the evii dence what actually caused the acciVlent. The only conclusion he could 'come to was that deceased was accidentally crushed under tlio railway 'wagon, and that.there was no blamo 'tittachablo .to anyone.; Ho would also to the need of authority }ieifl£ "given for tlio Hospital surgeon to obtain outside assistance wlien honwere not available.-
