Two horses in a wagon bolted, and in .attempting to atop the runaways Harper was knocked clown, ono horse ■ treading on him, and tho wheels passing over his shoulder. Concussion of the brain and an injured lung wero sustained, but no bones were broken. . Harper is progressing favourably. ,- DEATH IN A PICTURE THEATRE. Dunertiri, January 11. AWit half-past eight last night Robert August- Jager, a resident (,f South Duncdin, aged 35 years, was fritting in the top gallery of the Process Theatre watching tho pictures, when lie was suddenly overcome, and foil fi'ce downwards. Dr. Evans was called in, but found that life had departed. The body was removed to the morgue, where a post-mortem examination v-as to bo made. An inquest will bo held to-mor-row afternoon.
SCHOOLTEACHER'S SAD END. ' ' Chilstchiirclij January 10. A young woman named Mary Scott, 24. years of ago, a school teacher at Charlton, Banks Peninsula, was admitted to Alexandra Private Hospital on January'o suffering from blood poisoning. She was operated on, and vas progressing satisfactorily. Early last night, however, she was found on tho ground at the back of Die hospital, having tumped out of the window. Her skull was fractured, death being almost instantaneous. A post-mortem examination showed that deceased v. as suffering from meningitis. BOY DROWNED WHILST SURFING, Wanganul, January 11. An eleven-year-old boy named Kuecn was drowned at Castkcliff on Saturday whilst bathing in tho surf. Ho was caught in the undertow. A companion macfc a gallant attempt at rescue. : '■'-. FOUND DROWNED. ' ■'' - Timaru, January 11. A man between 30 and AO jears of ago named Hugh Frizzeil was ftund drowned on the rocks at the Marine Parade at 7.30 this morning. He was, last seen at his boardinghouso at. 11 o'clock last, night. An inquest is to be held. His parents live- near Christchurch.-
.. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. ~ Auckland, January' 10. Maude Anderson, a middle-agod woman, the proprietress of a boardinghouse iii Upper Queen Street, attempted to commit suicide by taking poison last night. For a fortnight her behaviour had not been normal. Sho threatened to commit suicido on several occasions, and yesterday was prevented from taking a poisonous toothache mixture. In the evening sho announced that she had taken poison. Emetics wero administered,'and the woman was taken to tho hospital. Tho woman's condition is not serious.
