SWIMMING.
[Bt "Splash."] N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS, In Sunny Blenheim. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Championships aro to bo held in tho Municipal Baths, Wynen Street, Blenheim, on February IG, 18, 20, and 23 of this year. In reference to tho fixture our Blenheim correspondent writes: —"Tho secretary of tho championships (Mr. N. R. Stone) was in Wellington during the holidays, and he informs me that all arrangements are well forward, and it is anticipated that it will bo one of the largest meetings yet held. Already some forty men from Canterbury, and a largo contingent from Haivke's Bay, have signified their intention of taking part in tho championships. Owing to the closo_ proximity of Blenheim to Wellington, it appears certain that the latter centra will be well represenl/ed. Blenheim is a pretty litlo town in which to spend a week's holiday, and excollent accommodation can be obtaiued there. Tho social side of tho meeting is not being overlooked, and the Marlborough people, being most hospitable, tl# visitors icail rely lon having a capital time. Some entertainment has been devised for every day in tho week.
From tho above, and from statements which "Splash" has heard, peoplo aro evidently going to do their best to mako tho gathering better than its predecessors. Although nothing has actually happened here, whicli would causo anyone to have tho least suspicion that tho championships aro to take place, next month, there appears to be every likelihood that tliero will bo something doing in tho course of tho next few days. Possibly after the Wairarapa Club's carnival, which is to bo held on January 22, there will be a few aspiring champions.
Young M'Carlie lias been doing a little training on tho quiet, and lie is now becoming quite a fast swimmer. Recently, at the baths, lie covered 100 yards in 66 l-530c. This is very good time, when' it is considered that C. Brice's time for tho 100 yards at the last championship meeting was Gosec. M'Carlie will most likely go for a standard certificate at the Wairarapa meeting on Jauuary 22. He is steadily on the improve* and lio has every 'chance of gaining a standard certificate, if he improves a little on his present excellent form. In the event of liis obtaining tiie certificate, it is reasonable to suppose that lie would go in search of championship honours at Blenheim. The Programme. "Splash" has received copies of the programme of tho 1914 championships Iron) the secretary of the local centra and from our Blenheim correspondent. The championships aro being held under tho auspices of the Nelson Centre of the N.Z.A.S.A., and included in tho programme is a 75 yards schoolboys' championship. In view of the keen interosn taken in sohool swimming )V ■Blenheim, it behoves local Schoolboys to bo represented in this event. The prize-money is liberal, and tho trophies ,for every handicap event aro worth £'2 2s. to the first man, and £1 15..t0 the second. Copies of the programme and entry forms can bo had from the secretary of the local centre, Mr. J. S. Stevenson. Tho following is the programme :—First day (Monday, February 16): —73 yards inter-club handicap; 100 yards N.Z. Amateur Championship; 50 yards ladies' inter-club handicap;'Uovelty event (inter-club); high dive (intcr-club); One Mile N.Z. Championship; 100 yards ladies' inter-club handicap; 00 yards intcr-club scratch race; novelty event; 400 Yards Flying Squadron Championship (teams of four men); springboard dive; wat-er polo finals. , Swlmmor Suspended. At a recent meeting of the executive of the 'Wellington-Swimming Ceutro it was decided: "That Percy Wilton bo suspended for failing to attend the meeting to give a satisfactory report, qualifying a statement alleged to have been made by him to the 'clfcct that persons were receiving proficiency certificates crediting them with having swum greater distances than they actually did swim." This statement naturally cast ;V reflection upon tho character of Mr. T. Shields, who has charge of the certificates, and when the charge was mado tho centre decided to hold on inquiry. Sir. Wilton, who is alleged to have made the statement, was asked to give an explanation. Failing to attend, lie was supended until such linio as he thinks lit to give a satisfactory statement. Mr. Wilton no doubt understands the meaning of being suspended.
Other Local Notes. Sv/imming locally is making a slow start this season. When the centre acked for permission to control all carnivals, the affiliated clubs would not hear of such a thing. It appears that whilst the clubs have 110 wish fur the centre to run carnivals, tho clubs do hot wish to run carnivals on their own. This position is borno out by tho fact- that to date there have been no applications from local clubs for permission to hold a carnival. Olio club is alive, and that is the Worser Bay Surf and Life-saving Club, which is to hold a function oil January 22. Unfortunately tins club is in tho position of not being able to decido a championship at its meeting, as tho carnival is to bo held at Worser Bay. It is high time that sorao clubs wake up to tho fact that the season is well advanced, and that a carnival or two to keep up public interest is necessary. As yet tho local centro has had no reply from Australia regarding the proposed visit to Wellington of tho crack Australian swimmer, Longworth. A satisfactory reply is expected within the course of a few days. Tho centra has decided to present every member of the polo team to compoto at the Now Zealand championships with a gold braided cap. There is some talk about the formation of a North Island Swimming Association. This proposal, it is understood, is to receive attention when the North Island delegates pass through Wellington on their way to Blenheim. At a recent meeting of the Wellington Head Centro of the Royal Lifesaving Society it was decided to grant tho Paekakariki Surf and Life-saving Club sufficient'-.money to purchase another life-saving reel. Tho society did well when it decided to grant the money because tho enthusiasts at Paekakariki liavo a long stretch of beach to control and this spot, as a swimming resort, is fast becoming popular. During the summer months many people go surfing there, and in parts, the beach is somewhat dangerous. "Seo that bowhiskered roan walking with Mies Poach. Ho'o very hirsute." "N'o, he's hoi miitor,"
