RIFLE SHOOTING.
EMPIRE DAY CHALLENGE CUP, ■'.y. ■>■■;;THE CONDITIONS.: Colonel R. J. Collins has been advised that, with the approval of the War Office ami under the auspices of tho National Rifle Association, tho-competi-tion, for tho "Empire Day ChallengeCup" will be held on any one day from April 1 to May . 24, 1914, • inclusive. The competition, which, vfill be held.on any. available range, is open to one team of forty from any unit of His Majesty's service. The prizes will be as follow:—First prize—The Empire Day Challenge- Cup, £100 in money, and 41 silver commemorative medals; second prize—£30 .in money and 41 bronze niedals; third prize—£2s in money- and 41 bronze medals. In addition there will be two prizes of £20, five of £15, and six of £10. Forty-one medals-havo been provided instead of 40 as pfevkrasly. This means that the captain of tho team need not necessarily bo a firing member of the team. There will also be five special prizes consisting of £50 and four of £23, which, can- be- won under special conditions. The competition wilt be fired for in three-stages, viz.: —l. (a) To' represent shooting at short range in long grass or similar cover at 150 yards; (b) shooting from behind ■ cover 'at 200 yards, 2. This stage, at 400 yards,, is intended to give effect to observation of fire, which'at short range on active service is of the utmost importance; so as to make the- necessary correction for errors and hit the mark aimed at. 3. Rapid Fire. —This stage is intended to represent tho final repelling'of an assault which has been checked at close range when a steady volume of wellaimed rapid fire is essential to complete the success; ' Range, 300 yards. _■
In stage" 2'the timo limit- is one minute for. each competitor, timed from the word "fire" to a'whistle signal to cease fire. The time limit in stage 3 is one minute- for each competitor, timed from the word "go" at 350 yards to a wnistlo signal to ceass fire at 300 yards. The possible- score that can bo made in the competition by any one individual is 20 points at each stage ef three stages, and 40 at stage 3, or 4000 points for a team of "40. There will bo no ontraneo fee for tho competition, .but the commanding officer of any unit which! proposes to take part in it must inform the secretary, /National Rifle- Association, Bisloy Camp, Brookffin'l, Surrey,-at as early a date as possible, in order that a special scoring register and butt memo, may bo sent for the unit. No other scaring register mil bo rppoeniscdThe result of the competition will ho made known in July, 1914. No scores will be admitted unless the score registers are received' by tho N.E.A. by July 1, 1914. A full list, giving tho prize winners and scores of unsuccessful teams, will bo published and a copy sent to each -competing team. .
