OVERSEA HARBOURS.
r-4 , AND DEVELOPMENTS IN SHIP- . BUILDING. "Times"—Sydney "Sun" Special Cabk«. (Rec. January 8, 6.35 p.m.) London, January 7. • Lord Pirrie •(chairman of Harland and Wolff, Ltd., Belfast), in a memorandum to the Dominions Trade Commission, referring to likely developments in ocean-going vessels, states that in Australia and New Zealand these developments may bo limited by the nature of the facilities obtainable at the ports, and also tho draughts of water prevailing. ,He refers in terms of satisfaction to the Melbourne Harbour improvements, and said that, provided the facilities and draughts of the different Australian ports permitted a steady increase in tho sizo of vessels, builders would not bo justified in setting a limit. Lord Pirrio adds that the minimum depth for an Empire port should, in his opinion, be 4o foot. Professor Biles (President of the Institute of Naval Architects) submitted a memorandum predicting that within twenty or thirty years, a depth of sixty feet could be profitably employed.
