The work of the New Zealand Farmers' 'Union is evidently now being appreciated in the North of Auckland, .where the advantages of the organisation have not hitherto been availed, of to the same extent as iu tho southern portion of tho province. The Auckland provincial executive at present has before it applications for tho formation of new branches from Wbakapirau, Ruatangatfi (Whangarei), and Oksihau (Bay of Islands). The Smithficld and Pareora Freezing Works opened for tho season on Monday, when a fair number of sheep and lambs wcro forward. ■ More than a sufficiency of butchers was offering. Eat stock is plentiful, and a good season is confidently anticipated. A resident of Napier has, says our special correspondent, succeeded m f rowing some potatoes which are a cross otwecn a Red Dakatoa and an TJp-to-Dato. The potatoes aro white, and have cloarly-defin«d r«d patches on them. i ■ ■ • . A telegram from Timaru states that the hot weather since Christmas has brought on the early crops, and harvesting has already begun. During the same period good progress has been made 'with shearing. Mr. A: Asluvorth, of Central Ota'go, recently sent a sample of gooseberries grown by him in Alexandra \o the "Obago Daily Tim-ps" office, Dunedin, fourteen of which weighed a, pound. The land agents of Marion have adgptcd a. scale- of charges to rogulato on all business transacted by'the Marion men who are- out ''to sell the earth." The scale was submitted to tho local Chamber of Commoree and approved. The Marton Dairy Company sent away a. record shipment of cheese yesterday, the amount totalling 11$ tons, or about £750 worth. This is exceedingly good for such a small company, there being only 20 suppliers.
