PORTEOUS WINS.
BAD WEATHER FOR THE FINALS.
Most uriplcasant weather prevailed for the concluding day of the Wellington Bowling Centre's Tournament. There was a littlo rain, and a strong wind swept across the green. A small handful of enthusiasts watched the contests to the end. Tho semi-finals and tho final were very keenly contested. Price, of Ncwtown, went down to E. J. Hill, of To Hiwi, and Porteous (Wellington) defeated Crawford (Karori) in the semi-finals. This left Hill and Porteous to fight iwt the final. The competition was finished in tho gathering dusk. Porteous led very strongly at several stages of the match, but tho To Hiwi men made several creditable attempts at recovery. The end came, however, with Porteous leading by 25
to 11, and victory was his. Hill, himself, was in excellent form* At the conclusion of the day's play tho prizes were presented—tho rose bowl to tho Non-town Club, and the trophies to Porteous's and Hill's rink. The Play. The struggle between E. J. Hill (To Hiwi) and i-rice (Newtown) was close, though Hill led all tho way. Hill gained tnrce points on tho first head, ana Price evened tho scores at tho next head. At the next threo heads Price failed to score, and Hill worked up to nine, which gave him a lead of six. By tho tenth head Price had reduced Hill's lead to two: Hill, 10, Price, 8. Another lapse of threo heads without his scoring increased Price's deficit to 7. Ho scored six on tho next four heads, and so when the eighteenth head was commenced Hill led by 15 to 14. The Te Hiwi rink drew steadily away, adding four at the three following heads, and when tho final head was undertaken Hill was o up. Price made a. big effort to pull the gamo out of tho fire, but at tho conclusion lay only one, and the tnroe went to Hill by 19 to 16. Porteous (Wellington) and Crawford (Karori),fo)ight out their semi-final very stubbornly; Porteous gained three on tho opening head,' aud lour on tho second head. Tho third head yielded one to the Karori man, but at tho sixth head Porteous led by 7 to 1. In tho threo following heads Crawford's rink did splendidly, and evened tho score. The fourteenth head found Porteous ajj;ain well'ahead—l3 to 8; but at the nineteenth 'head he led by a point only —15 to 14. The struggle at the two remaining heads was exceptionally keen. At botli of them Porteous secured a point, and ho took the gamo by 17 to 14. The Last Struggle. ■ In tho final Porteous soon establish, cd a strong lead. At the fifth head tho rinks were equal—3 all. At tho sixth head Porteous notched three points, and he advanced steadily till at the eleventh head he was leading by 14 to 4. Hill rallied. Ho obtained ii point at tho twelfth head, and was lying one at the thirteenth head, when Porteons drove with his last ehot and nave Hill threoHill added one moro at the fourteenth head—Porteous, 14; Hill, 9. At the sixteenth head Porteous was ten points ahead—l 9 to 9. • Hill gained a point at each of tho next two heade, but at tho nineteenth head Portions was again ten in tho van—2l to 11. Tho To Hiwi rink failed, at the twentieth head and tho final hend was entered upon with Porteous leading by 23 to 11. Porteous added two moro points at the final head, a'nd took the gama and the'competition'by 25' to 11.' ' "
