FROM LYTTELTON WHARVES. (By Tdtjranh—Press A»oalatloa.) Chrlstchurch, January 6. The decision of the new watorsidors union to admit any person of good character, in accordance with advico from tile Labour Department and Crown Law Officers, makes it certain that the exstrikers will control that body within the- next few days. The union will probably contain about 600 men shortly, 400 being members of the old Stevedores' Union. The ex-strikers do not appear to have been aggressive in word or action, but it is stated on good authority that a change of officers will bo made this week. Tho present president and secretary were elected by the Arbitra-;. tioniste during tlio strike. A meeting is called for Thursday next, when the Arbitration president will tender his resignation. About 210 men were engaged on the waterfront this morning, no further labour having been engaged since last wnek. The aotion of the Lyttelton Wharf Labourers] Industrial Union of Workers, in deciding at last night's meeting that the union be, open for application for all members of the old union, is causing favourable comment among ex-strikers, who nrn anxious after their long period of idleness to return to their employment. The secretary of tho Lyttolton Stevedores' Union (Mr. H. It-. Voyco) is making application to-day for enrolment of tho whole of tho members of that body in tho new union. Tho. okl union is paying a cheque for the amount of the men's entranco fees and subscriptions for tho first month. .■ . ' A meeting of the Lyttelton Stevedores' Union was held this morning, the business being connected with the wind-ing-up of tho union's affairs. This afternoon 126 members of flip old Lyttelton Waterside Union, including tho president (Mr. F. Lurch) and the secretary (Mr. H. I?. iVoyeo), marched in n. body to the Te Anau, and. were enrolled as members of the Jiew union, the strength of which is now 546. Seventy-five more are expected to sign on to-morrow. By arrangement with tlio Harbour Board, tho police were removed from the approaches to ,thc wharves this afternoon, leaving the wharves open to the public.
