NOTES AND COMMENTS.
.. re* Glixcok.l ■■ News reached hero by cable message .yesterday that C. Emerson had benn disqualified for twelve months at Sydney! No particulars are available, but presumably the trouble occurred at the Canterbury Paris meeting, When rM : iiiK in-tlio Dominion, Emerson boro a very high name, and his many friends hero wore astounded to think 'that ho could possibly do any'thihß to merit such a drastic sentence. Until further particulars come to hand .wo cannot know anything of the facts of the case. It is particularly unfortunate-' for the lad that the disqualification should conic just as ho was on the point of leaving for New Zealand, ' . ' ,■ weights for this Wellington Meet- : in? iiro published in this issue, in the Cup, Midnight Sun leads th-e way with 9st. The dual Derby ■ winner,. Cherubim, seems, nicely in with Bst. ! filh. This is by no means a prohibitivn '. impost for a good )h'rop.\voar-old, and it looks as if. the son. of Martian ij really i
Rood. 1 * Sinapis and Tnnnhau6er are also on the same mark, and their owners should have no oiuiso for complaint. Kilratn, Bst. 31b., appears to have bowi given a few pounds too much, and so dims Cheddar, s with one pound less. Rinaldo, 7st, 111b., aud Martins, vat. 91b., are both well hi. But why Marshal Macdonalil, 7st. 61b., should.meet Byron on even terms, and give weight to* Memo Itoe, Flora Jlacdonald, hidoga, and Royal Arms is difficult to understand. .--. ■ , ■ ■„■' .'.■■■
.. Bandiern, 95t..,.81bi, could not possibly got- in' with less in the Telegraph Handicap. The chestnut horse is undoubtedly in a class by himself amongst tho sprinters of tho present time, and in only • getting 31b, from him, Postillion seems to have all the worst of it. Expect, Bst. 121b., is badly treatcd in being asked to concede 21b. to Bliss.' Ou first glaiice, tho pick of jhc handicap seems to bo Paltssido, 7st. 131b. ■ This horse always carries big weights at tho southern, meetings, and is remarkably fast over-a ehort course,
Acceptances for the first day's handicaps at Trcntham and entries for tho Trial Stakes, Disposal Stakes, and Selling Plato close next Monday at 9 p,tn.
The ■'fire,"' which resulted in the do-st-ruction of the Harp of Erin stables at Dllerslie, shows how careful trainers should be in superintending the actions of tbo stable hands under, their care. Most likely it was caused by some cafeless youth smoking when fcodiiig at 8 p.m. Mr. G. F. Moore, of Kai Iwi, is to bo sympathised with in the loss of his valuable mare Pliroso, and so is Mr. Dugaltl Thompson, - owner of Lady Menschikoff. .Both marcs were win* nors at tho recent Ellerslio meeting. The fire may have been a lot worse had it occurred twenty-four hours earlier, ns there would have been a lot more horses in tho boxes then. Tho train which left at midday on Sunday took the majority of the southern horses.
One result of the- big fire at Auckland will be tliat A.-Hall--will have to cancel his trip to Sydney. Ho intended leaving at once with Phroso, North East, and Deiiise Orme, but tho death of Phroso, and the injury to tile lastnamed will render that impossible.
The filly by Birkenhead—Jlahurf," seld at tho Karamu disposal sale, at Palliierston North, is bred on the same lines as Rencontre, , the Great Northern. Foal Stakes winner. Under tho circumstances she must bo considered remarkably cheap at 70gns.., at which figure Jlr. \Y. G. Stead seemed her.
Cheddar has'boon sold to M'r. T. S, Jlmilston, of ; Hastings, for 500 guineas. It would havo been particularly unfortunate for Mr. Roulstou if Chedda.r had come to any serious harm in yesterday's firo at Aucklan.d
Owners who intend to be represented at tho To Kuiii Racing Clufys meeting nest month, should not overlook tho nominations, which dose this wecls. In connection' with the Butt Valley Trotting Club's annual meeting -on January 23, owners are reminded that nominations for all events closo at 9 o'clock this evening .with the club's secretary, Mr. K. W. Short, Petono. f .: .', FIXTURES. Jan. 21, 22, 21—Wellington Eaciti? Club. Jan. 23-Hutt Valley Trotting Club, Jan. 29 and 31—Takapuna Jotkcy Club* Feb. 4, s—Ettmont liacing Club.
