THE TAILORING TRADE.
A SLACK SEASON. January, usually one of the steadiest months in the tailoring trade in tlio Cit}', is this year very quiet. According to the secretary of the Tailors' Union, the recent strike is the cause of this. From. October 1 to October 20 tho Wellington tailoring firms were working overtime, and tho employees making good money, so that it- was confidently expected, with the Christmas season approaching, that the employees would have a record timo of work.' When the strike broke out there was aJi immediate falling away in trade, and. overtime ivas lost to employees, and in .'some cases employers were forced to get rid of hands, for whom work could not be found. The Christmas rush was delayed till the fortnight preceding tho festive season, and then it was tho demands of visitors to the City that again caused a brisk period. January is always looked upon as one of tho good months, but tho Christinas purchasers having been supplied, the month has fallen flat, a,nd on the hooks of the union tho names of several unemployed appear. This is particularly unfortunate, ■ as next month heralds in the slack time of the year, when, employment will bo hard to secure.
