e_ JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondents.l NAPIER. Tho fishing industry at Tort Napier appears to be looking up again, and seino very satisfactory catches havo lately boon recorded. _ Tho vital statistics recorded at Hastings during the past vear wore:— Births, 350; marriages, 100; deaths, 94; as compared with 325 births, 112 marriages, and 68 deaths in tho previous year. Tho number of patients treated at the Napier. Hospital is rapidly increasing, and the following comparison of the number of patients who were admitted, discharged,"or died during tho past three years indicates,that the policy of tho board in constantly adding to tho hospital buildings is ltilly justified:— 1911: Admitted, 430 males and 236 females; discharged, 362 males and 227 females; died, 58 males and 16 females. 1912: Admitted, 591 males and 338 females; discharged, 509 males and 314 females: died,'s3 males and 14 females. 1913: Admitted, 613 males and 349 fcmales; discharged, 534 males and 315 females; died, bO males and 26 females. Total for the three years:—Admitted, 2557; discharged, 2261; died, 262. There was a very big increase in tho number of patients treated between 19U - and 1912, and the numbers still increased between 1912 and 1913, though iu a lesser degree. :. • . Tho vital statistics for the Waipawa District for tho last three years woro as follow:—1911: Births, 120; deaths, 36; marriages, 27. 1912: Births, 105; deaths, 25; marriages, 32. 1913: Births, 130; deaths, 41>'; marriages, 33. A petition is being circulated in Greenmcadows and Taradale asking the Taradale Town Board to consider a proposal to extend the Napier trams to thoso districts. Tho majority of tho residents favour-the trams, but many .'prefer to.wait until tho suggested road across the swamp from Knpier South to Groenmeadowis is formed, as. this would provide a uioro direct, and therefore less costly route. Mrs. Nash,' Mayoress of Pahheriton North, who was staying in Napier during the Christmas holidays, is now on a visit to Auckland. Mrs. W. H. May, who has beon on a visit to her father, Mr. R. T. Sadd, of Napier, left on Saturday raorniug for her home at Nelson.
