Constable Patrick Smith, of the Donnybrook District, of the Dublin Police, lias had the B.A. Degree of the National University conferred on him. His distinction is unique, as he is the first constable of the force to secure the degree. During the week of his examination, which lasted from 9.30 a.m. till five p.m. daily, he was attending to his public duties as usual, being on night duty from ten p.m. till six a.m. A clothes-cleaner of Kingstown _ met with an accident recently while sitting by the firo endeavouring to empty the contents of a'Mausor cartridge, out of winch 'he intended to make a iiencil case. Tho detonator exploded and blew off the first finger and thumb of the left hand. The man is one of'tho "characters" of Kingstown, nnd his homo may he fairly described as' an armoury, containing as it does all sorts of old and discarded military uniforms wjd weapons,
