THE WESTLAND JUBILEE.
The jubilee of. Westland, which is to bo celebrated this week,- ■ is an event that will awaken memories in the old and should awaken interest, and something more than interest, in tho young. ■■ To .the people of the province and to those bailing from it who arc now scattered ■ up and down New Zealand the occasion will, of course, have a peculiar appeal, but" every \ New Zcalander should feel that he has a part ■ in celebrations of this. .nature 'which from time to time recall the infancy of our country and clays when life was more vigorous and less complex than it is now. ' The history of Westland is not as eventful as that. of some other parts of the Dominion, and long before pioneer diggers invaded its solitudes men and women had battled bravely for a foothold in other.scenes.of early settlement. Nevertheless the . province has .contributed an interesting chapter to the history ■ of tho Dominion.' It attracted its' quota of Jtha simplehearted, ■ strenuous men. aad women l upon whom wo now look back'aVthc race of pioneers, arid they did their share of the good work that has bene-1 fited later generations.'. fl Tho .tale of the and achievements of pioneers in Westland and elsewhere throughout, New Zealand is our best legacy from the past. The traditions of the country which we have not yet ceased to call Home have their place in these distant Dominions,,but it is desirable that'we should r 'also do everything in our power to keep the memory of ...our ~:■■;own ■■'■ pioneers and their green.. and unforgotten ■, from;' generation to generation. ..'
