At tile official luncheon of the Regatta Committee 011 board the steamer Maunganui at New'castle, Mr. Cannington, in proposing the toast of "The U:iion Company," said that in 1875 the company had only three steamers, while to-day it owned seventy-five, with a total tonnage of 234,000. Mr. Caiman Williams, responding, said that the company's steamers travelled three million miles last year, consuming 600,000 tons of coal, and carried three million tons of cargo and 250,000 passengers. Four thousand live hundred people were employed on the company's vessels.
