4 i-h: ■ THE GOLD RING. Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., was on the bench at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. A young woman was charged with the theft of a .gold, ring, valued at £7, belonging to Mrs. Rangiapoa Waikari Broughton. Sho guilty, and said that she had found tho-ring. Tho police stated that tho ring was missed-on December 23, and had just been discovered in the possession, of tho defendant; On tho application of the police a remand until tliis morning was granted. Bail was lixed at £10,. with'oue surety of £10. ALTERCATION IN CLYDE QUAY. , John. .Cameron, pleaded- guilty to charges of insobriety, threatening .behaviour, and obscene language. Ho was lined £5 10s., in default ono month's imprisonment. Tho''offences arose o.ut of an altercation in Clyde Quay. Wil- | liam Conrick,, tho other party to the altercation, was. fined £2 for, threatening behaviour, and allowed a fortnight in which to pay tho fine. Tho default was fixed-at seven days',imprisonment, 'SALE'OF'A BILLIARD TABLE. Charles Vivian.Porteous was .remanded ;till January' 7on a.charge of his having stolen £45 belonging to Pcreival Carter; The offenco. was, alleged to have been committed at Hihitahi (near Taiii&p'e), on December 29. . ■ Chief-Detectivo Broberg ' said thatPoirteous had been' arrested on a war-rant-issued in Christchurch. A remand was desired, bccauso a witness would have to bo brought from Taihape. Tbs allegation was that Porteous had been employed by Carter to dispose of, a bil-liard-tablo for him', and that Carter had sold it to a man at Hihitahi, erected it, and received £45, which ho had failed to hand over. Defendant said that his father was a grocer in Palmerston North.' Bail was fixed at £50, with ono surety of £50. THEFT OF MONEY ALLEGED. Frederick William Donaldson, a young man, was charged with having f«ilea to account to tho Union Steam Ship Company for, £7 45., .which ho is alleged to have received, from William Paul. Ho"was remanded to appear in Dunedin on Tuesday next. . Chief-Detective Broberg said that a telegram from Duuedin'indicated .that further charges would bo mado against tho defendant. When the. question of bail was mentioned, Donaldson said that his father lived in Wellington. Bail was allowed in tho sum of £50, with .two sureties of £50 each, or ono of £100. : INSOBRIETY. :For insobriety; William _ Ballantyne was convicted and prohibited, David Gillespie was fined 10s.~, Edward Mohan 10s., and'Jahtes M'Laughiin 10s..
