BOWLS & BOWLERS.

THE WELLINGTON CENTRES - TOURNAMENT. OPENING DAY'S PLAY. The Wellington Bowling Centre's 'annual tournament was commenced on all the city greens yesterday, a start being niado on tho '.ma jority <jf tlio greens shortly after 9 a.m. One game was played before luncheon, and two full ganjbs during the .afternoon. After tho perfect wwither of tlio hist fow days yesterday s weather was not so palatable to bowlers, who found tile high nor'-westeriy wind rather disconcerting on many occasions. Iji some instances ail extraordinarily healthy gust of wind would strike a bowl on tlio quarter as it curved toward ' tho jack, aiid straighten it ijp against tho bias, and tber.o were other occasions wiiojii shots laid down with "excellent judgment went wide of the'jack under the influence'of a .chasing puff. Thorp were somo rattier interesting variations in'for/ii recorded during the day. Oiib which caused wore comment than any Qther was the defeat of .Wellington's'veteran skip, Webb'(who had | a very good rink), by Mitchell, of Ha- | taitai. Mitchell's rink played very well, but Webb's men' did not seem to bo ablo to sense tlio green at all. Webb only scored 9 to Mitchell's 37. Webp t also went down to Stephens (Petone) in tho second round. A n ". other old' "Wellington skip of repute, Moult, went down sensationally "to Snaddon (Victoria) in the second round. Moult's rink .could only fjet up to eight, whilst tiic"Victoria skip piled up 32. Ross (Petone) was badly {jounced by Trhretliick (Hutt) in the second round, scores being 33 to 9. During the afternoon at the Wellington CluVs green one of the homo club's skips' drove mightily. His bowl struck the iviter. tap and turned on tho water, ' jyhon it is" knowii that the skip hi question is'a" teetotaller, tho reniark of a - bystander that it was the first time the placer in question, had been kiioivn to '""turn it pn" will bo appreciated. _ The secretarial duties in cpnncction with tho tourii-anie.ijt are being carped' .out by Mr. J.'J. .Roberts, whoso, systemof running a tournament could hardly, be improved Upon. Otakj w.a? the solitary country town which entered a rjuk.iri the tournamept. They, won all three games' yesterday. .

In the third round (Wellington) away from tho. crack Newtosni'skip,':Prin<!c.' On tho twentieth head the score' was 2o—B in Sieyrwrigbt's'favour.
