RACING AT TAUHERENIKAU. ' FIRST DAY. | • IMMER WINS THE CUP. ! (By Our Special Reporter.) .The Wairarapa Racing Club had glorious weather for the opening day of its. Summer Meeting, and a very large crowd'journeyed'by rail to tho meeting. Tho special trains from Wellington were crowded both. ways. During the day the sum .of- £16,507 was put through tho machine, an increase of £3310 oil the figures for the opening day of tho last Slimmer meeting., . .. When the scratching pen had finished its work in tho Maiden Hack, only five runners wero left. Vocation, ridden by It'. D. Jones, started at a short price, and scorfed a very lucky win. At the turn into tho straight, Holywell, who was in the lead, ~.ran out, and carried Merry Gain with liim, allowing tho favourite, who was hard ridden at this juncture, to slip up on the fence and win by, a length. . The open six furlongs was the best raco of the day, and at the finish the whole field was bunched,. Eoceno led at the start, but .The Great' Mogul cut her out, and carried -on the running with .Mount Victoria. Before tile straight, was reached, Suratnra,. Merry Guy, and Lord Possible joined in, and a great finish resulted in a head victory for Lord Possible, with the other trio in a line. Tho' Rimutaka Hack Handicap looked the best of good things for Braeburn, ond so it proved. The favourite' was tailed off at tho start, but when tli'o last half-mile was entered upon, Traill took, him up, and lie got through on tho fence tho whole way.' In tho straight his. superior finishing powers told, and tho others wero stopped; Top' Note struggled on well, and got second place, just clear of Monologue, who made, all the. runnng. Tho winner was riddeni, bareback r most of;the, way; and; under tho circumstances'his' perform-' ance was a good one.

Immer equalled Sea Queen's record for tlic course in the W'airarapa Cup, In which she got to the entl of tlie ten furlongs in ,2rain. 7sec. Peroneal jumped away in. front from a good ftart, but, at the stand, Immer was in socolid place. Sho remained, there till the half-mile; when she moved x up alongside the leader, while Birkline ran into third place. Immer was out two lengths at the straight l, entrance, and then Sinapis and Kilrain moved up. The, Trentham mare maintained her position to tie post, Kilrain finishing a head in front of Peroneal, with Sinapis, close up. Tho latter was unlucky enough to get stopped l by- Ariom at tlie half-mile. She was flying over everything at tho finish. l In point of looks Reputation and Columbus stood out amongst tlie juveniles, and the public backed them in. that order. Reputation was badly placed over the first half of the, journey, but Columbus had every chance and came round tho turns' well. In the straight Roumania, who had been handy the whole-way, came fast arid beat Columbus by a, neck. Reputation also finished well in third place. Silverstream wa3 - clear of the remainder. .

The Pitkio Haok Handicap was a' very pretty race the whole way. _ Listen fave a lot of bother at tho barrior, but tarter O'Halloran eventually got them away on even terms.... Arrahna and Overrate soon were in front, with the two favourites last.. The latter moved up at tho half-journey. and a very pretty race ensued. Arrahna held her position, in the run home and defeated Charlerose by" a neck. Overrate was third, > and the others ' wero in ■ a bunch. Overrate was - badly chopped out at tho half-journey, and was sent to tho rear. .Ho then> finished at a great rate. ... ■ Sartovna was backed as a moral m tho Reynolds Handicap, and the littlo filly sc'oreTl with consummate oase. She- was in chargo from tho word "Go," and at tho finish won witli her head ill her. chest. Mount Victoria was her nearest attendant throughout' tho journey,. .but tho others matlo no.show ft all. . . . - - ..-Sarboiiito, was winning the Hack Welter very comfortably, but at tho turn'he stoppod_ dead and _ then commenced to pig jump. This allowed Chillies to get lip antli' defeat .him, wliilo l'iermont also finishod iii front of tho bay gelding. • " . (By Toleeraph.—Special Correspondent.) Marten, January 1.Dull, Lot weather wjis experienced for the first day's racing of tho Marton Jockey Club's Summer Meeting. There was a largo attendance,; and tho day's racing was'good, though 1 tho fields wore small. Tho track wis fast, and good times were registered. Eight faced tho starter for the first l'ace,. the Hack Hurdles. Huia delayed 1 : tho start, but tho field was sent'away on even terms. Hatana led tho field over tho first two jumps. Jackman struck the second jump, and, swerving bsdly, dislodged tho rider. Passing; tho stand tho first timo Hatana led ,*!'ionacr;i, Huia, Whimper', Tho Diver, and lbliar, with, Grit Lawless last. Tiie Diver camo up to second place along the back. Tho lead-, ers into tho straight werfi Hatana, The Divor, and Huia ; . Tho Diver made a great run from tho larifc hurdle, and passed Hatana, finishing; well, with a length to the good. Huia was third a couple of lengths away,, and then followed Whimper, lbliar, :-,nd Grit Lawless, with Eiouacra last.' Hatana was made a' warm favourite. Adams, tho rider of Jackman, sustained a slight concussion. /

Square Deal was made a liot favourite for • the Trial Hack Plate, with Lubrilino second iit demand. -Square Deal justified the contidemre of investors, for, loading all the way,'.lie stalled off a strong challenge in tlie straight by Hansard, and won by a bare length. Hansard did not appear to have a citanco going along tlie. back, being about eight lengths beliinjd tli© favour- 5 ite. Rounding the bend! however,, ho made a groat run on tho outsido, and overhauled Lubriline, but failed to draw up to the favourito. Ccj'mbustion was left at tho post. Pavlova was the only i ne fancied of the field of five that facid tho starter in the Electric Hack H: mlicap. Tho distance suited her, and leading tho field to the straight, tlio fi ily drew away and.won easily by four elngths, with L'adify and General Made; o fighting for second place, The formei got the verdict by over n, length. Sepoy was last. Tho race for the Martoi Cup was tho best of the day. Tho ten staiters were got away well together. Lady Volga was tho first to show oui, with' Byron as a close attendant. Pas: ing the stand the first timo Lady Volg:, Byron, and Soatomkle wore in tliotvan, with Expect- close up fourth. Los Angelos, Lord Renown, aud,Masto- Laddo wero lying handy, and iho others were strung out. Going round the hack tho field was bunclied, bub passing tho five-fur-long post Expect and Lori Renown improved their positions. C lining to the home turn, Expect and jord Renown were on terms, loading a dose-following lot. Scatoii'lalo then cann rim on tho outside, and these three horses fought out a great race. At tho finish tliev coulrl have been colored with a sheet, but Oliver managed lo keepprido of place, and lifted to victory

by a short head from Lord Renown, Seatomlalo being placcd third by tho judge, .a neck away. Sir Knox, two lengths further back, was fourth, followed by Byron and Lady Volga. Expect carried slightly over one-fourth of investors' money.

For the New Year Hnidicap, Hangiwhetu and Victoris took up tho lead when tlio barrier lifted, followed by' Master Lupin and To Hon Hou. Tho order of tho leaders was not changed till tho five-furlong post wa3 reached, when Ranguvhotu found tho pace too hot, and ■ dropped l)ack, To Houj llou coming up into third place, witli Lady Nolan close on her quarters. At the straight Master Lupin came up on tho outsido, hut St. Elmn shot out of the ruck and took command, getting a victory over Victons by a neck, with Lady Nolan eloso up third. Te Hou Hou was fourth, followed by. Master Lupin, with. Moiretto and Raiigiwhctn last. The public again got on to the winner in tho Railway Handicap, backing Heather strongly. She took command early in the race and maintained it to the end. Stalling off a challenge by Lady Louisa in tho straight, she won by a length and a quarter from Lady Louisa, with Makara threo lengths away third, followed by Sanguinary and Grattan.

The Dash Hack Handicap was an easy victory for Epworth, who took command rounding the turn into tho straight. The start was bad, several horses getting 'held back, while Alecto and Aratiatia got away in the lead. Aratiatia, who was favourite, tried to keep tho lead, but Epworh finished strongly, and cot homo by over three lengths, with Vladineau third a length away. Alecto' was fourth, and His Eminenco fifth.

Six horses faced the starter for tho last race. St. Gate got atvay in the lead and .kept the advantage for half a mile, followed by Ngatimaru :and C-oro-mandel, with Stepney lying handy. Coromandel then drew up, and all were bunched at tho home turn, where Stepney came on tho outside and beat Coromandel for first place by a length, with St. Gate third. DETAILS OF THE RACING.
