ST. JOHN'S, TRENTHAM.
JUBILEE SERVICES. December 23, ISG3, the little Anglican Church, nt Tveiitham was consecrated anil named _Sh John's after ihe day upon which it was celebrated. Sunday last (St. John's Day) ir<is therefore the jubilee of tho church, and the Bishop or Wellington (Dr. Sprottj at evensong preached eloquently before a. congregation which pi-overt- greater • than tho building could well accommodate. Choosing for his text the 23th Chapter of Genesis, verse 22: "And this stone which I have set for n pillar shall l:e God's house," the Bishop traversed tho history of the church in .Trcnthani in particular o.nd' in New Zealand generally, mid expounded ujon tho wondrous vision of Jacob of old, and the marvellous conversion of ono whose eyes' vreio-opened to the wickedness of his past life and to the glory of a changed life dedicated .to tho.service of Clod. St. John's, Tronthnni, with its typical surroundings, .giaveyard, and_ shrubbery, is ono of the oldest churches in tho Wellington diocese, and' is little changed in structure. It is almost as staunch to-rby as when first built, tho beautiful memorial window dedicated by tho late Sir. Charles Bateson being the most noticeable change inside since St. John's Day, ISG3.- .
